We started off last week talking with the Maple Tree group about activities they wanted to do. They expressed interest in sewing. I decided we would start with felt art, I brought out several different colours for them to use. One of the kids made an ocean scene with coral, weeds and whales. One child was creating different shapes with the felt. Another child did a space scene with stars, a spaceship, and an astronaut with planets. Another one of the artists enjoyed creating new flags with the felt for their imaginary countries. The felt art turned into storyboards. As the storyboards became art, one child said, "That would be cool to make a pillow with my initial on it, can we do that?" Later in the week they started sewing pillows with their initials on them. When they picked their fabric, some children chose polka dotted fabric, striped fabric, and bright yellow fabric. Their creative vibes came out with the different ways they were doing their pillows. Some of the pillows looked like dog bones and clouds, and one was a long pillow with a big red "A" on it. Some even had pockets! As the pillows were being sewn, the children asked if we could start a sewing club. We talked about what they would like to create. A popular idea was a sock monkey. Stay tuned for more sewing adventures! written by: Rae
