Last week the kids in cohort A explored the explosive world of volcanoes! They started off by drawing a 2D example of what they wanted their 3D volcano to look like. The next step after that was to start molding their paper mache creations. They all really enjoyed getting their hands messy and gooey in the paper mache mixture. In pairs of two they constructed their ideal volcano. The next step was to paint it and make it their own! They were very anxious to finally see it erupt... what with the waiting for the paper mache to dry and waiting for the paint to dry, they were eager to see the final reaction! One child predicted what was going to happen; "We're going to add stuff to the bottle and it will EXPLODE!" and another had high expectations; "I want it to explode all the way to the sky!" Our in house scientist was really interested in the science of it all; "Are we going to need any goggles to wear, like scientific goggles?!" Finally Friday rolled around and it was time for the big finale, the eruption of the volcanoes! There was a lot of experimenting with the measurements of baking soda and vinegar, we noticed that it all depended on the size of the bottle their volcano was made from. In the end, we got to see the volcanic eruptions we had been waiting for, nothing short of Mount Vesuvius for these kiddos!
